Pernambuco, a wood native to Brazil, was an important commodity in the 1500s for the red dye that it produces. Today, it’s the material of choice for violin bows, but the tree it comes from is becoming scarce not only because of demand, but also due to rainforest shrinkage. Conservationists now try to revive the numbers of the Pernambuco tree.
