F Scott Fitzgerald’s third novel, “The Great Gatsby,” contrasts the glamorous affluence of 1920s high society with the gray, industrial wasteland of New York’s working class. It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire pursuing the wealthy Daisy Buchanan, whom he had loved since youth. Inspired by the tragedy of insurmountable class barriers that hid behind the era’s glossy Art Deco infrastructure, the Montblanc Great Characters Homage to the Great Gatsby Special Edition fountain pen features a barrel in deep precious blue, dotted with a gradient of facets reminiscent of a skyscraper at night. The barrel end is shaped like a flask screw cap with thin rings in the blue and red of the American flag, representing the corruption of the American Dream. The money clip-inspired platinum-plated pen clip frames Jay Gatsby’s gold-plated monogram on the cap’s resin surface, and on the finial is the Montblanc logo that glows in the dark, symbolizing the unreachable green light at the end of Daisy Buchanan’s dock. Etched on the 14-karat, rhodium-plated gold nib is Jay Gatsby’s famous car.
