It’s amazing how the artist collective Kokkokai can create illusions with different materials. For the Namiki Capless Water Surface, raden pieces are embedded close together near the two rhodium-plated rings in the middle of the pen—the farther the lines go, the more broken they become. This gives the effect of a soft light touching the water’s surface at night, whether you’re looking from above or beneath. The irregularities of each small piece convey a sense of movement, as if a gentle breeze were blowing across the surface. With 10 layers of lacquer sealing the pen, you have the illusion of depth.
