In Japanese culture, the crane (tsuru) and the turtle (kame) symbolize good tidings, longevity, and prosperity. They are often depicted in art and in clothing. They are also the stuff of fables, the most popular of which is of how the turtle saved the crane from drowning, and how the crane repaid its debt many years later by saving the turtle from drought.
The crane and the turtle are revered symbols seen during celebrations, such as New Year’s Day and Respect for the Aged Day (Keirō no Hi). They are also featured on the Namiki Nippon Art Crane and Turtle fountain pen, created using the hira maki-e (flat maki-e) technique by Kokkokai, a group of artisans that has worked on Namiki pens since 1931.
