Frequently depicted together in art, the crane and the turtle are symbols of longevity, good fortune, and prosperity in Japanese culture. This bond draws from folklore, which tells how the turtle saves the crane from drowning, and years later, the crane returns the favor by saving the turtle from drought. They are often depicted in decorations and merchandise during celebrations such as New Year’s Day and Respect for the Aged Day in the hopes of ushering in long life and continuous happiness.
