Daruma Otoshi (“Dropping Daruma”) is a traditional Japanese toy depicting a daruma (a doll representing the founder of Zen buddhism and a symbol of good fortune) sitting on top of a wooden stack. The goal is to knock the lower pieces with a toy hammer without causing the daruma to fall.
Celebrating culture and nostalgia, Daruma Otoshi is one of several traditional toys featured in the Namiki Nippon Art Toy series, which uses the Hira Maki-e technique that highlights the design’s playful vibrancy against a shiny black background.
