Taira no Kagekiyo is probably one of the most famous historical samurai who still inspires characters in modern media. A prominent warrior from the Taira clan, he fought against the Minamoto clan during the Genpei War (1180) and later had Minamoto no Yoritomo assassinated. He was depicted in Heike Monogatari (The Tale of Heike), a fictional retelling of the war written sometime in 1240, and has been an inspiration to many artists throughout the centuries.
Aside from being recently released as a video game character, this legendary samurai is also featured on the Namiki Ukiyo-e Taira no Kagekiyo fountain pen as interpreted by the artists of Kokkokai. Using Hira Maki-e, Taira no Kagekiyo is shown wearing intricate armor. This level of detail is balanced by small, gold squares on the cap. The pen carries a No. 5, 14-karat gold nib.
