When it first arrived in Japan, the goldfish, which was believed to have the power to ward off evil, was a pet that only the wealthiest could afford. Many decades led to its democratization, and in the 18th century, it became a popular household companion, so much so that it was said to have led to the publication of the first book on the matter: Kingyo Sodate Gusa (1784), which translates to “How to Raise a Goldfish”.

Goldfish was the subject of many ukiyo-e prints, and the fascination for them continues today. They are found on many things including household items and lanterns used summer festivals. One beautiful interpretation is found on the recently-released 2025 Pelikan M1000 Maki-e Goldfish Limited Edition fountain pen that is done using Togidashi-taka maki-e (burnished raised maki-e), a laborious blend of techniques that offers an ethereal, three dimension effect.

We have for sale a brand new Pelikan M1000 Maki-e Goldfish Limited Edition with an 18C-750 gold nib in M and gold-plated fixtures. This piston-filler fountain pen comes complete with its paulownia wood gift box, papers, and other inserts.
