A historic port city, Shanghai is one of the biggest melting pots of China. After the First Opium War, ports were opened to British, French, American, and German merchants who established different quarters and concessions within the city. Power struggles became common among foreigners and locals, and these continued for many years until World War II brought an end to “Old Shanghai”.
