A common theme in classic ukiyo-e is flowers and butterflies, with master artist Hokusai depicting it in his work during the 1800s. One of his most popular woodblock paintings was “Peonies and Butterfly”, which was made sometime in 1831 and 1832. Flowers and butterflies also appear in lacquerware and fashion, symbolizing the turning of seasons and the cycle of life.
