In 1888, while he was in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, Vincent Van Gogh painted “The Novel Reader”, featuring a solitary woman in slight shadow absorbed in her book in a brilliantly backlit setting. He wrote to his sister Willemien, “I’ve now also painted a woman reading a novel. Abundant, very black hair, a green bodice, sleeves the colour of wine lees, the skirt black, the background completely yellow, library shelves with books…” The work reflects Van Gogh’s talent in depicting intimate moments and how he captures serenity despite his dynamic brush strokes.
This painting’s palette inspired the Visconti Vincent Van Gogh The Novel Reader, which highlights the woman’s green bodice matched with the background’s streaks of red and yellow.
