The creation of Saihi urushi or “rhino-skin lacquerware” dates back to the Song Dynasty in China. Despite its name, Saihi urushi is not made from rhinos. 😉 It’s probably called such due to the layers upon layers of lacquer applied throughout the process—sometimes as many as 40—which produces a texture and pattern similar to the animal’s skin.

Saihi urushi pieces are rare: in ancient times, they were only afforded to the imperial family, and even today, they’re not easy to come by. In the hopes of bringing the technique to a wider audience, Wancher collaborated with Fuizhou artisans to adapt this unique and meticulous style to their world-class fountain pens. One of which is the Wancher Sekai Saihi Urushi Murasaki-Age Raden, which features a deep royal purple beneath its signature pattern, highlighted by flecks of mother-of-pearl.

We have for sale a brand-new Wancher Sekai Saihi Urushi Murasaki-Age Raden fountain pen with a steel nib (F) and a red ebonite feed for improved ink flow. It comes complete with its box, papers, and inclusions.
